Papio, also known as baboon or dog monkey, is a genus of mammals in the family Cercopithecidae, order Primates. The genus was described by Erxleben in 1777. The type species of the genus is Cynocephalus papio Desmarest, 1820 (= Simia hamadryas Linnaeus, 1758). The genus belongs to the subfamily Cercopithecinae, with a total of five species. They vary in size and weight. The Guinea baboon is 50 cm (20 in) long and weighs only 14 kg (30 lb) while the largest species, the Chacma baboon, can be 120 cm (47 in) long and weigh 40 kg (90 lb).
