Tokyo, the capital city of Japan, has a long and rich history that dates back over 400 years.

Originally known as Edo, Tokyo was a small fishing village until the 16th century when it became the political center of Japan under the Tokugawa Shogunate. During this time, Edo grew rapidly in size and importance, becoming one of the largest cities in the world by the 18th century.
